Kevin Lang for Westminster

Kevin at Westminster

Kevin Lang is the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Westminster constituency of Edinburgh North and Leith, one of the top target seats for the Lib Dems anywhere in the country. At the last General Election, the Liberal Democrats came just 5% of beating Labour in this constituency. The Tories and the SNP finished a poor and distant third and fourth respectively and cannot win here now. The next election is now set to be a close two horse race between Labour and the Liberal Democrats in Edinburgh North & Leith.

Local Knowledge

Kevin knows Edinburgh North & Leith well. He lives locally with his wife Jennifer and baby daughter Madeleine at the waterfront near Granton. He was born at the Western General Hospital and went to Davidson's Mains Primary and the Royal High School. He also has strong family roots here. His family's business was on Easter Road for over 100 years and his grandfather was a worker at Leith docks.

Westminster Experience

Kevin worked for popular Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, John Barrett for over four years, including two years at Westminster. He has real hands on experience of Parliament and understands how to use the Westminster system to get results. He is not afraid to stand up and speak out for Edinburgh North & Leith.

It's Labour or the Liberal Democrats in Edinburgh North & Leith

Remember, the race in Edinburgh North & Leith is between Labour and the Liberal Democrats. The Tories and SNP are too far behind and can't win here. Every vote for them will only help Labour win and continue to take Edinburgh North & Leith for granted.

Kevin's priorities.....

  • Save our jobs - The economic downturn has left too many people struggling to get by. Kevin Lang wants to see big tax cuts to help those on low and middle incomes and action to protect local jobs. Support needs to be provided to those who have been made redundant or who find themselves in debt.

  • Police not Plastic - Labour's plans to force people into getting compulsory identity cards are expensive and ineffective. The money allocated for this project should be used for more police and better intelligence services, a far more effective way to tackle crime.

  • A fairer deal for pensioners - too many older people still face a life in poverty, almost 10 years into this Labour Government. The mass means testing of pensioners is insulting to older people and has a poor take up rate as a result. Pensioners need and deserve a proper increase in the state pension, linked to the growth in average earnings.

  • Respect for international law - The UK Government seems to have learnt little from their disastrous involvement in the illegal war in Iraq. International institutions like the UN needs to be reformed and strengthened. International law needs to be respected by all countries, whether in the middle east or the west.

  • No to Nuclear - we need to move away from carbon based fuel. However, until a long term solution is found to the issue of waste, nuclear power is not the answer. Scotland has a real chance to become a world leader in developing technology for renewable energy such as wind and tidal power. We need to use that potential and generate more of our power from these sustainable sources.
