Edinburgh City Council issues advice to residents on waste collection11.36.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 27th Jul 2009
With some Council waste collection and street cleaning staff currently on a "work to rule", residents may be finding disruption to their waste collection and street cleaning services. The staff involved are in dispute with the Council because we are introducing new pay arrangements. These new arrangements ensure fairness and equal pay for work of equal value as required by law. Staff who receive bonus payments as part of their wages (mainly refuse and street cleansing workers) are losing their bonus payments because of this. ADVICE TO RESDIENTS DURING THE DISPUTE Night time black bin bag collection - Put bags out as normal. Day time black bin bag collection - If not collected, represent on next scheduled collection day. On street waste containers (for non-recyclable household waste) - If full, use alternative site or Community Recycling Centre site or take home and return another day. Paladin bins (high rise flats)- Chutes could be closed to avoid blocked chutes and fire risk. Use Community Recycling Centre sites or take waste back in and re-present on another day. Packaging banks (supermarkets and in tenement areas) - If bins are full, use alternative site or CRC site or take home and return another day. Domestic wheelie bins (green bins) - Leave your bin out even if not collected. Garden waste (brown bins) - If not collected take back in and re-present on next scheduled collection day. Composting at home is a great way to dispose of your garden waste. The Scottish Government fund the national Home Composting Campaign allowing us to promote a range of compost bins at reduced prices - please visit www.wasteawarescotland.org.uk for more information or to order a compost bin. Please note that paper banks and the kerbside red and blue boxes are being serviced as normal.
