Good news as extra 'barrow beats' to help clean up the streets of Leith2.15.11pm GMT Mon 23rd Mar 2009
Liberal Democrats in the Leith area have welcomed a new initiative to help clean up local streets. The Liberal Democrats in Edinburgh have allocated extra funds to start up 'barrow beats' to help tackle the issue of street cleanliness. There will be nine new barrow beats operating in Leith as of next month. Each will have a different area of Leith and Leith Walk to patrol every day, Monday to Friday, and will be full time workers who will have a chance to get to know the community and the problem areas. Local Liberal Democrat councillor for Leith Walk ward, Louise Lang said "I am delighted that this is about to start. In their years running Edinburgh City Council, Labour left street cleaning in a terrible state. Indeed, this was one of the reasons why the people of Edinburgh voted Labour out of office two years ago. "Since then, the new Liberal Democrat led administration has chosen to make the issue of local street cleanliness a key priority. These nine new beats will make a real positive impact on our neighbourhoods and I'm looking forward to seeing them out, taking care of our streets. It is yet another example of the Liberal Democrats delivering real positive change as part of Edinburgh City Council."
