Liberal Democrats in Edinburgh North & Leith have called on energy companies to follow Scottish Gas in cutting their energy prices.

Today, Scottish Gas became the first energy company to reduce its prices, by cutting its standard tariff by 10%. Seven million households across the UK are expected to benefit.

Edinburgh North & Leith includes the headquarters of Scottish Gas at Granton. Local Liberal Democrat candidate, Kevin Lang said,

"This will come as welcome news for the many Scottish Gas customers in our area who have been struggling with rising energy bills. For too many people in Edinburgh North & Leith, this past winter has left them with a choice between eating and heating.

"It is now important for other companies to follow Scottish Gas and to do so quickly, now that wholesale gas prices are coming down. Going forward, we need a much fairer system of pricing to avoid small users and those on low incomes being unfairly penalised. This is something Liberal Democrat MPs will be pushing for in the House of Commons."
