An abandoned railway tunnel in Canonmills is to be reopened this summer thanks to a Lib Dem Minister, 20 years after Lothian Regional Council built a cycle path to its mouth.

The tunnel links the King George V playing field with the Tesco site in Broughton Road and, when reopened, will allow cyclists and pedestrians to bypass the busy junction at Canonmills. The work can go ahead thanks to an award of money from the Scottish Executive.

Liberal Democrat Transport Minister, Tavish Scott, said, "I am delighted that another piece of the cycle network can be put in place. This demonstrates my continued commitment to invest in healthier and greener forms of transport."

Local LibDem spokesperson, Mike Crockart added, "This is great news for the local community. Twenty years was long enough to wait for this important link which will allow cyclists and walkers to follow a route between the city centre and the Firth of Forth without crossing a busy road."
