Tenement Recycling Campaign Stepped Up9.20.24pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 18th Oct 2006
Liberal Democrats have stepped up their campaign for improved local recycling facilities for people in flats and tenements in North Edinburgh. Many residents have complained about the poor service of doorstep collection. Although recycling bins are located on some main streets in North Edinburgh, they cannot be used for glass because of safety. The recycled material also fails to generate any revenue. Now the local Liberal Democrats are demanding action from the Council. Louise Lang, Lib Dem council candidate for the Leith Walk ward recently met with officials from the Scottish Executive project for tenement recycling. She said, "The fact the Council raises no money from the recycling of items placed in these bins is a wasted opportunity. We need a long-term self-funding project to ensure that money earned from recycling products goes back into improving local services". Charles Dundas, Lib Dem council candidate for Central Edinburgh added, "Everyone wants to do their bit to protect the environment and the Council could be doing a lot more to assist. A Liberal Democrat council would make local recycling a top priority."
